Royal Enfield unit construction EFI engine
Following the introduction of tough new European regulations that require reduced carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen emissions for all motorcycles, (Euro 3), Royal Enfield designed a completely fuel-injected new unit construction engine, which is fitted to all new models from January 2009. Not only is this new engine ‘greener’ than its predecessors, its modern design offers enhanced performance and reliability, without sacrificing the essential character of the ‘British single’ from which it has evolved.
Until 2009 Royal Enfield motorcycles were fitted with a separate gearbox, but the new design combines the 5-speed box within the engine casing. Operated via a 7-plate wet clutch, it is lighter and more accurate than the previous system. Lubrication has also been improved, enhancing both reliability and performance, with power increased to 28 BHP in standard form with 41.3 Nm of torque at 4000rpm. Fuel economy remains excellent – tested under Euro 3 conditions the engine returns just under 80 mpg. Other modern items included in the design of the new engine include hydraulic tappets and electronic ignition, both of which require minimal maintenance. A catalytic converter is fitted inside the silencer.
In order to retain the authentic ‘British Single’ experience Royal Enfield retained the bore of 84mm and 90mm stroke from the original Bullet engine, as well as air-cooling and pushrod construction, so it remains simple and inexpensive to maintain too.
Following an initial service at 500 miles, servicing is required every 3000 miles.
